A stubborn, elderly woman and her oppressed son treat two public health nurses to an unusual form of Southern hospitality in 1970s Appalachia.
REVIEW
Thick audiovisual imagery evokes mythic southern Appalachia as a white public health caseworker and her African American intern drive up a country road to check on an elderly woman with uncontrolled diabetes who lives with her son, a work-at-home hog butcher. A looming crescendo of racial tension becomes palpable when Buddy refuses to shake Diasha's hand and predicts, "Ma won't like this." Not so. In fact, an unpaid black "servant" is something Ma can relate to-just what the doctor ordered as she faces possible amputation of her leg. Festival screenings include the Cannes Short Film Corner and the Palm Springs International Short Film Market.
