A Uruguayan investigator goes to great lengths to determine whether the national army is protecting a notorious Chilean war criminal, and comes up against strong resistance from all sides in her quest.
REVIEW
Julia is a prosecutor for the judicial courts of Uruguay. When she investigates the disappearance of a Chilean chemist with ties to Pinochet, she uncovers a web of deceit that stretches beyond international boundaries.
"Matar a Todos," which translates into "Kill Them All," has the gripping, suspensful feel of a corporate legal thriller. Julia is played by Roxana Blanco, whose performances is as sensitive as it is fierce. While she works tirelessly to uncover political and ethical corruption in her beloved home country, she is forced to reconcile her crusade with the demands of her family life--a husband and child who fear for her safety--and the loyalties of her father and brother, whose sympathies may lie on the wrong side of history.
A passing knowledge of recent South American politics may be helpful during the first several scenes of the film, but the plot unravels itself slowly and deliberately, giving even a newcomer to Uruguayan-Chilean relations time to catch up. As bracing and sophisticated as any Julia Roberts corporate thriller, "Matar a Todos" is a thoughtful, engaging portrait of a woman's quest to uncover difficult truths in the face of mounting resistance.
