If you have ever seen Bobcat Goldthwait's films before, you know that World's Greatest Dad will be both funny and shocking. This film, staring Robin Williams, is a thoughtful but outrageous comedy about a man who learns that the things you want most may not be the things that make you happy and that being lonely is not necessarily the same as being alone. Join us at the Palace Theater in welcoming Bobcat back to Syracuse, then join Bobcat at OHM Lounge in Armory Square after the film to close the fest with a fabulous wrap party!

World’s Greatest Dad is a thoughtful but outrageous comedy from Bobcat Goldthwait. It is a story about a man who learns the things you want most may not be the things that make you happy, and that being lonely is not necessarily the same as being alone.
Robin Williams stars as Lance Clayton, a man who has learned to settle. He dreamed of being a rich and famous writer, but has only managed to make it as a high school poetry teacher. His only son Kyle (Daryl Sabara) is an insufferable jackass who won’t give his father the time of day. He is dating Claire (Alexie Gilmore), the school’s adorable art teacher, but she doesn’t want to get serious – or even acknowledge pub- licly that they are dating. Then, in the wake of a freak accident, Lance suffers the worst tragedy and greatest opportunity of his life. He is suddenly faced with the possibility of all the fame, fortune and popularity he ever dreamed of, if he can only live with the knowledge of how he got there.
Bobcat Goldthwait was born in the outskirts of Hollywood (Syracuse, New York) in 1962, Bobcat Goldthwait wrote and directed his first film Shakes The Clown in 1991. It was heralded by the Boston Globe as the “Citizen Cane of Alcoholic Clown Movies”, and lays claim to such fans as Martin Scorsese and Michael Stipe – in fact, the REM song Binky the Doormat was based on a line from the film. Goldthwait’s next movie was Windy City Heat. Matt Stone (co-creator of South Park) has called the film “beyond genius” and Vice Magazine called it, “quite simply the greatest movie of all time”. Sleeping Dogs Lie marked Bobcat’s third film. It was shot entirely during a two-week hiatus from his job directing Jimmy Kimmel Live (2004 – 2006). It was chosen to compete in Sundance’s 2006 Dramatic competition, and was also in the London, Toronto, and San Sebastian Film Festivals that year. Bobcat has directed for many television shows, including Chappelle’s Show, The Man Show, and Crank Yankers. As a comic, he had three HBO specials and had appeared on the David Letterman show by the time he was 20. As an actor, he appeared in an innumerable slew of movies and was huge in the 80’s, all of which has allowed him to live in an impossibly luxurious rental home in the Los Angeles area.
Director's Statement
When I make a movie, my only goal is to get to see it projected in front of an audience. Preferably, an enthusiastic audience, but I’ll take what I can get. That’s why I’m thrilled that World’s Greatest Dad got into Sundance. My last movie, Sleeping Dogs Lie (aka Stay), was in the dramatic competition in 2006. That experience is my fondest show-biz memory. The crowds at Sundance were so receptive and supportive, it was kind of ridiculous. I hope I can continue to make movies with my friends, and I hope I can keep making them outside of the system, and on my own terms. If I’m lucky enough to get to do that, hope I can keep on watching them with enthusiastic (if not slightly frozen) Park City crowds. After twenty five years in the business, I finally figured out what I love doing and I feel like I’m getting away with murder. - Bobcat Goldthwait
